Name: Betty’s Bay Weekend House

This small erf intended for a weekend house had a high water table which formed a vlei on the Northern side most of the year. The house was therefore raised onto a concrete platform supported by four columns. Southern views towards the sea were obscured, but the oblique north facing view from the balcony looked out onto Spitsberg and Katberg.

 

The three bedrooms and balcony faced different directions. A centrally placed fireplace surrounded by windows allowed light into the living areas. Access into the house was provided by a small suspended staircase and a pitched roof in four directions complemented the simple geometry of the house.
