Boschendal Winery

Name:           Boschendal

Location:       Franschhoek

Status:           Completed 1971

The appointment to restore the old werf of Boschendal after the 1969 earthquake led to much research. The derelict front gable of the main house was destined for demolition but Gawie insisted, using boarding on both sides, to jack it back up and strengthen it appropriately. The half broken gables of the wine cellar and barn were similarly reconstructed. An old farm worker also gave detailed descriptions of the early buildings and landscapes, so even the gardens could be restored, using Gwen’s collection of old roses. The beautifully restored Manor house interior and wine cellar were both repurposed into an 18th Century museum and a restaurant respectively.
