University of Cape Town Institute for Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine (IIDMM)
Name: UCT IIDMM
Location: Observatory, Cape Town
Status: Completed 2008
The Institute was originally housed in three separate buildings, but the University of Cape Town wanted to physically and symbolically link their activities.
The link building was to bridge the space between its neo-classical neighbours housing the research laboratories, but to stand respectfully recessed from them. To avoid weakening the new building’s symbolic role by setting it back, a contemporary cylindrical reception and teaching block was placed in the space created by the arms of the old buildings.
West-facing floor-to-ceiling glass walls in the drum fully expose the important views towards Devil’s Peak. Moveable vertical louvres protect against the westerly sun and heat gain when required. A roof garden on the east side is planted with medicinal plants in recognition of the buildings use.
